# Steam Controller Gyro and Grip Sense Setup Guide
Gyro aiming means moving the controller itself to aim, instead of pushing a stick. Used well it lands somewhere between a thumbstick and a mouse: far more precise than the stick, easier to hold steady than a mouse for large movements.
The 2026 Steam Controller has a 6-axis IMU for this, plus Grip Sense, and the two are designed to work together. Valve's official gyro guide covers the underlying Steam Input controls. This page turns them into a few usable starting points.
What Grip Sense actually is
Two capacitive touch sensors sit on the back handles of the controller. They detect your grip, and Steam Input reads them as buttons, meaning you can bind them to anything. Valve's Grip Sense guide explains the sensor range, activation threshold, and flicker guard.
Valve's stated reason for building them is specific: giving you a fast way to turn gyro on and off so you can recenter the controller.
Ratcheting, which is the whole point
Valve's own analogy is the right one. Using a mouse, when you reach the edge of the mousepad, you lift it, move it back to the middle, and put it down. The cursor does not move while it is in the air.
Gyro has the same problem. Aim far enough in one direction and your wrists are at an uncomfortable angle. Ratcheting is the fix: lift your fingers off the back of the controller, gyro switches off, recenter your hands, put your fingers back, gyro switches on again. The camera does not move while your fingers are off.
Once this becomes muscle memory it stops feeling like a setting and starts feeling like how the controller works.
The activation threshold is adjustable, which matters more than it sounds. Set it sensitive and a slight finger lift is enough. Set it firm and you need to properly release the handle. Sensitive is faster, while firm is harder to trigger by accident. Start firm and loosen it once you trust it.
Gyro modes, in plain terms
As Mouse sends mouse input. The most precise option, and the one that behaves most like actual mouse aiming. Requires the game to accept mouse input alongside controller input, which most modern PC games do.
Mouse Joystick sends stick input that behaves mouse-like. Use it when a game refuses to mix mouse and controller input in the same session. The important limitation: it can never turn faster than the game's own maximum camera speed, so if a game has a slow camera cap, gyro inherits that cap.
As Joystick is the simplest and least precise. Mostly useful when the other two misbehave.
Default to As Mouse. Fall back to Mouse Joystick only when a game fights you.
Setup
- Open Steam Input for the game, Properties then Controller, or the Steam button then Controller Settings.
- Find the Gyro section.
- Set the gyro mode.
- Set the activation binding to a Grip Sense sensor.
- Set sensitivity.
Steam Input configs are per game by default, so a setup that works in a shooter will not follow you into a strategy game unless you deliberately apply it.
Three starting presets
These are starting points, not settled numbers. Gyro sensitivity is genuinely personal, more so than mouse DPI, and everyone lands somewhere different after an hour.
Shooters
- Mode: As Mouse
- Gyro activation: Grip Sense, gyro on while gripped
- Sensitivity: start moderate and raise it slowly
- In-game: turn off aim assist if the game lets you, and set in-game sensitivity to something mid-range so the gyro has room to work
- Stick handles turning, gyro handles the last few degrees onto the target. Do not try to do everything with gyro.
Mouse-driven games (strategy, builders, anything with a cursor)
- Mode: As Mouse
- Gyro activation: Grip Sense, or always on
- Sensitivity: lower than your shooter setting
- Pair gyro with a trackpad for cursor work, trackpad for travel across the screen, gyro for fine positioning.
Racing and camera control
- Mode: As Joystick or Mouse Joystick
- Gyro activation: always on for steering, Grip Sense for camera look
- Sensitivity: low
- Steering wants smooth continuous input rather than precision, which is the one case where the simpler modes make more sense.
Grip Sense beyond gyro
Because Steam Input reads the sensors as buttons, gyro toggling is only the default use. Weapon wheels, map, and menu bindings all work, and they give you two more inputs without moving your fingers off the sticks.
Worth trying after gyro toggling feels natural, not before. Learning both at once is how people end up giving up on gyro.
If it feels wrong
Drifting when you are holding still. The controller needs a moment on a flat surface to recalibrate. Put it down, leave it alone briefly.
Too twitchy. Lower sensitivity before anything else. Most people set it too high at first because low sensitivity feels sluggish for the first ten minutes and then feels correct.
Gyro fighting your stick. Reduce how much turning you do with gyro. It is a precision tool layered on top of stick movement, not a replacement for it.
Nothing happens at all. Check that Steam Input is enabled for that specific game, and that the game is not overriding the config with its own controller handling.
