Steam Frame vs Steam Deck: What Is Actually Different

Steam Frame and Steam Deck both run SteamOS and can play flat games, but their processor architectures, displays, controls, and primary use cases are different.
Steam Frame and Steam Deck share SteamOS, a Steam library, and support for flat games. They are still different kinds of computer. Deck is an x86-64 handheld with an integrated screen and controls. Frame is an ARM64 VR headset with tracked controllers, two eye displays, and a PC streaming path.
That architecture difference is the reason a Deck badge or benchmark should not be reused as a Frame result.

The table uses Valve's Steam Frame product and developer material and Valve's Steam Deck OLED page. Frame remains prelaunch, and Valve warns that some specifications can change before availability.
ARM64 versus x86-64
Steam Deck's AMD processor executes the x86-64 instructions used by most PC games. A Windows game generally needs Proton for operating-system compatibility, but its processor architecture already matches the Deck.
Steam Frame uses an ARM64 processor. Valve says most developers are likely to ship their existing Windows x86 build, which Frame runs through Proton and FEX. Proton handles Windows compatibility; FEX translates x86 instructions for ARM64.
Frame can also run native Linux ARM64 and Android ARM64 software. Those depots avoid the Windows-x86 route, but their availability is a per-game decision.
Why compatibility does not transfer
A Steam Deck Verified result covers Deck's form factor, controls, text, launch behavior, and x86-64 runtime. Steam Frame's standalone review checks a different form factor and runtime stack, with separate rules for flat and VR software.
A title working on Deck is useful evidence that a Linux or Proton path exists. It is not enough to assign a Frame badge. FEX compatibility, ARM performance, Frame controller behavior, virtual-screen presentation, and VR-specific requirements remain separate questions.
Why performance does not transfer
Deck's panel is 1280 × 800. Frame's two physical panels are 2160 × 2160 each, while Valve documents 1728 × 1728 per eye as the default VR render resolution. A VR application also has to produce tracked stereoscopic views at a cadence suitable for head movement.
Flat mode on Frame is a different workload from standalone VR, and streamed VR moves most rendering to a host computer. A single “Frame versus Deck FPS” number would therefore hide both architecture and execution context.

Controls and posture
Deck's controls are attached to the display and remain in view. Frame's controls are separate tracked objects designed for motion input, while still providing standard gamepad actions through Steam Input.
That changes where each device is comfortable to use. Deck is built for handheld play in compact spaces. Frame can display a flat game while seated, but immersive VR needs an appropriately cleared area and blocks the user's normal view of the room.
Where the products overlap
Both can present a conventional Steam game without turning it into VR. On Deck, the game fills the handheld display. On Frame, it appears on a virtual screen and can run locally or stream from a host.
The experience is not automatically better on one device. Frame offers a larger virtual presentation and isolation from the room; Deck offers immediate visibility, integrated controls, and no headset fit. The useful choice depends on the game, environment, and the user's comfort.
What only Frame adds

- Eye tracking and gaze-aware streaming features.
- A virtual-screen presentation for flat software.
Those capabilities also introduce setup, fit, tracking, and network variables that a handheld does not have.
What still needs retail verification
- Final Frame price, package contents, availability, and specification changes.
- Retail battery life and comfort beside the published Deck OLED figures.
- Side-by-side local performance for the same flat games.
- Breadth of native ARM64 and Android game support.
- Consumer streaming behavior across common host PCs and home networks.
