Steam Machine Upgrades: RAM, Storage, and What You Cannot Change
Summary
The Steam Machine's SSD and system RAM can be replaced, but the 8GB of graphics memory cannot. Storage is the easier upgrade; RAM takes substantially more disassembly.
You can replace the Steam Machine's M.2 SSD and system memory. You cannot upgrade its 8GB of GDDR6 graphics memory, CPU, or GPU through a documented module. Storage is the straightforward job; reaching the two SO-DIMM slots requires a much deeper teardown.
This guide is based on Valve's documentation, a published retail-unit teardown, and a community SSD repair guide. SteamHardware.io has not opened a retail Machine or tested memory and drive combinations, so exact module compatibility still needs to be checked before purchase.

Valve's product page confirms 16GB of DDR5 system memory and 8GB of GDDR6 VRAM. ETA Prime's retail teardown found a single 16GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM in one of two slots and successfully installed a 64GB two-module kit. That demonstrates one working configuration; it is not an official maximum-memory specification or a guarantee for every kit.
Storage is the sensible first upgrade
The stock drive is an M.2 2230, and the chassis includes a second standoff position for an M.2 2280. The community iFixit replacement guide documents both lengths, a T8 driver, shell removal, the exposed front I/O, and reinstalling SteamOS after the physical swap.
Before opening the case:
- Remove any microSD card. A card left in the front slot can be damaged during disassembly.
- Back up files that do not already exist elsewhere.
- Prepare Valve's current SteamOS recovery or installer media, or validate a cloning plan before removing the original drive.
- Confirm the replacement is a physically compatible 2230 or 2280 M.2 NVMe drive.
- Record where each screw and standoff came from instead of relying on memory during reassembly.
The physical SSD swap is only half the job. A blank drive needs an operating system, and a cloned drive needs a verified clone that can boot. Keep the original drive unchanged until the replacement starts, updates, and launches games correctly.

Internal storage makes sense when you want one fast local library and accept reinstall or clone work. It is not automatically the cheapest capacity.
RAM is possible, but access is the problem
Notebookcheck's report on the ETA Prime teardown describes the retail configuration as one 16GB DDR5-5600 CL47 module with a second SO-DIMM slot. Reaching those slots required removing the shell and disconnecting multiple internal assemblies; the memory itself was easy only after the board was accessible.
Do not buy a random second module solely because the headline specifications match. Firmware training, rank layout, timings, voltage, and mixed-module behavior can matter. The lowest-uncertainty path is a kit known to work in this Machine. Adding a second 16GB module can cost less, but verify the existing module's exact part number and the return policy first.
The demonstrated 2x32GB configuration proves that one 64GB kit booted and reported its capacity. It does not establish 64GB as Valve's supported maximum, nor does it show a useful gaming gain from that much capacity.
What dual-channel memory can change
The factory single-module configuration is single-channel. Adding a compatible second module increases system-memory bandwidth, but the gaming result depends on the workload because the GPU has separate GDDR6 memory.
Published summaries of GamersNexus testing reported by VideoCardz and TechSpot found a modest average change in GPU-focused game tests and larger gains in some CPU-limited games and compression work. That is a reason to consider dual channel for CPU-heavy games, development, or substantial multitasking. It is not evidence that every game becomes meaningfully faster.
Choose RAM for a measured need:
- Add capacity if your normal workload actually approaches 16GB.
- Consider dual channel when a CPU-limited workload benefits from memory bandwidth.
- Do not install 64GB merely to compensate for graphics-memory pressure; system RAM does not turn into more dedicated VRAM.
The fixed limit is graphics memory
The 8GB of GDDR6 belongs to the discrete GPU and is not presented as a replaceable module in the teardown. More system RAM or a faster SSD cannot raise that capacity.
That matters most at higher resolutions, with large texture packs, or in games whose memory use already approaches the limit. Lowering texture quality or output resolution may help a specific game, but there is no supported purchase that converts the Machine into a higher-VRAM model. There is also no documented drop-in CPU, GPU, or cooling upgrade. The machine can be opened for service, but replaceable assemblies are not the same thing as a desktop-standard upgrade path.
Opening it carries real risk
Valve's support guide says Valve does not recommend opening or modifying the device, notes that resulting damage is not covered, and identifies a T8 Torx driver for accessible screws. Read the current warranty terms for your region before proceeding.
The SSD route exposes the front I/O. The RAM route adds connectors, antennas, boards, and reassembly risk. If you have not worked inside compact electronics, paying a qualified repair shop can be cheaper than replacing a damaged connector.
What we would upgrade
For most owners, expand storage externally first and replace the internal SSD only when a single larger internal library is worth the recovery work. Consider 32GB of system memory when a real workload needs the capacity or dual-channel bandwidth, not as a general cure for game performance.
Leave the Machine stock when 16GB is sufficient and the current drive holds the games you actively use. The most buyer-important limitation, 8GB of VRAM, remains the same after every supported or demonstrated upgrade on this page.
