Steam Machine Multiplayer: How Anti-Cheat Affects Games

Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can work through Proton when a developer enables and configures them for its game. Kernel-space anti-cheat remains the harder SteamOS boundary.
There is no reliable all-time list of multiplayer games that work on Steam Machine. The answer can change when a publisher replaces an anti-cheat system, changes its configuration, or ships an update.
The useful question is narrower: does this exact game support its current anti-cheat path on SteamOS and Proton today? Check the game's Steam Machine rating first, then confirm any anti-cheat-specific claim with a recent source.
Why the anti-cheat name is not enough
Valve's current Proton guidance says Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye can support Proton, but support is configured per game. A developer still has to enable the right service, include the required files, and test the build it ships.
That is why two games using the same anti-cheat vendor can have different results. "Uses Easy Anti-Cheat" does not mean either "works" or "blocked" by itself.
Valve draws a firmer line around kernel-space anti-cheat. Proton does not currently support a Windows kernel driver running inside the compatibility layer. Activision describes RICOCHET as using a kernel-level PC driver, while EA's Javelin requirements include Windows Secure Boot. Those current implementations are not problems that a different graphics preset or Proton version can solve.
Read the Steam rating carefully
Valve reviews Steam Deck and Steam Machine separately. A Deck Verified game is guaranteed to be Machine Verified, but the reverse is not promised. Use the rating for the device you plan to play on.
The labels also say less than people sometimes assume:
- Verified means the reviewed build met Valve's listed requirements for that device.
- Playable means it works with one or more noted compromises.
- Unsupported can reflect anti-cheat, another middleware problem, missing Proton functionality, or a hardware requirement.
- Unknown means Valve has not completed a rating. It is not a failure result.
An Unsupported badge is a reason to read the compatibility details. It is not proof that anti-cheat caused the result.
Check a game before buying it
Use this order:
- Open the game's Steam store page and read its current Steam Machine compatibility details.
- Check the publisher's support page for the game and its anti-cheat system.
- Look for a recent report from the current game build, not a launch-day result from years ago.
- Recheck after a major anti-cheat or launcher update.
The GamingOnLinux anti-cheat list is useful for recent community reports across SteamOS games. Treat it as a lead to verify, not the same thing as a publisher commitment or Valve rating.
If one multiplayer game is central to your purchase, check that title rather than relying on the size of the rest of your library.
If a game stopped launching
Do the ordinary checks before blaming anti-cheat:
- Update SteamOS and restart the Machine.
- Update the game, then verify its installed files in Steam.
- Return to Steam's default compatibility selection if you forced another Proton build.
- Read the game's compatibility details and current publisher support notes.
- Check whether other players report the same failure after the same update.

Do not follow instructions that claim to bypass anti-cheat. At best they waste time. At worst they can put the game account at risk.
What is confirmed and what may change
Valve has confirmed separate Steam Machine compatibility ratings and documented supported Proton integration paths for Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye. What remains unknown is how each publisher will configure and maintain those paths for a particular game build.
Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye already have supported Proton paths, so a developer can change a game's status. A working title can also regress when its launcher or anti-cheat configuration changes. Kernel-space systems would require a different supported path before their Windows drivers could work through Proton.
That leaves three different kinds of answer:
- Valve's device rating describes the build it reviewed.
- The publisher controls the game's current anti-cheat policy and configuration.
- Recent player reports can reveal a change before formal documentation catches up.
Keep those sources separate, and date any game-specific conclusion.
