How to Install EmuDeck on Steam Machine
Summary
EmuDeck now supports Steam Machine through its standard SteamOS installer, with a few TV-resolution and controller checks still worth making.
EmuDeck uses its standard SteamOS installer on Steam Machine. We have not tested the finished setup on Steam Machine hardware.
On July 24, 2026, EmuDeck announced that Steam Machine was ready after fixes for SD card detection and missing controls in some emulators. GamingOnLinux, SteamDeckHQ, and VideoCardz independently covered the update. For an older install, update EmuDeck and launch any affected emulator from Game Mode. The fixes do not require a reinstall.
Legal-use note EmuDeck configures emulators; its official documentation says BIOS files must come from your own console and does not provide other acquisition methods. Use only game and system files you obtained lawfully and are authorized to use. Buying a game does not automatically authorize downloading someone else's copy, and copying files from your own hardware or media may still be restricted where you live. SteamHardware.io does not provide those files or help locate them. This is general information, not legal advice.
What you need
- A keyboard and mouse or another comfortable way to use Desktop Mode.
- Enough storage for your own game files.
- Your own game files and any BIOS files required by the systems you plan to use. EmuDeck's cheat sheet lists what each system needs and where it goes.
If a setup step asks for administrator access, see the Steam Machine sudo and Desktop Mode guide before entering a password.
If you plan to use a microSD card, format it from SteamOS before installing. EmuDeck's SteamOS guide lists EXT4 or Btrfs as compatible, while its desktop-install help page specifically recommends EXT4 from Game Mode when the card does not appear. EXT4 is the least ambiguous choice for this setup.
Install EmuDeck
- In Gaming Mode, open the Steam menu and enter Desktop Mode from the Power menu.
- Go to EmuDeck's official site and download the SteamOS installer.
- Open EmuDeck.desktop and choose Continue when prompted.
- Choose Easy Mode for EmuDeck's recommended defaults or Custom Mode to select emulators and settings yourself.
- Select internal storage or your formatted microSD card for the Emulation folder.
- On the device screen, select Steam Machine. EmuDeck's device selector includes a Steam Machine profile. See the resolution note below before you settle on a TV output.
- Choose Steam Library integration for individual game entries, ES-DE for one library frontend, or both. Keep Steam ROM Manager enabled if you plan to follow the next section.
- Let setup finish before moving your game files.
Check your resolution
Steam Machine emulator profiles default to a 720p rendering resolution. VideoCardz's report records the same default and the available app setting. Start at 1080p, then test 4K per emulator rather than assuming a higher internal resolution will hold its performance.
Add ROMs and BIOS files
EmuDeck creates an Emulation folder in the storage location you selected. Put each ROM in the matching system folder under Emulation/roms. Put required BIOS files in Emulation/bios unless the EmuDeck cheat sheet gives a system-specific location.
Keep the filenames and folder structure from the cheat sheet. A valid file in the wrong folder will not be detected.
Add games to Steam
- Open EmuDeck in Desktop Mode and launch Steam ROM Manager.
- Select the systems you want in your Steam library.
- Open Preview, then parse the selected systems.
- Review the entries and artwork.
- Save the entries to Steam, then return to Gaming Mode.
You can also use EmulationStation-DE if you prefer one frontend instead of individual Steam library entries.
Check controls
Launch an emulator from Gaming Mode and confirm every expected input before changing its controls. Adjust only the bindings that remain wrong.
Check performance for each emulator on your TV. Steam Deck HQ's report on the update notes that higher-resolution optimization was still on EmuDeck's list when Machine support arrived. A 4K display does not mean every emulator should render internally at 4K.
