Steam Frame explained
Steam Frame is Valve's wireless SteamOS headset. Reservation signups opened September 14, with US kits at $1,059 for 256GB and $1,299 for 1TB. Both include controllers, a wireless adapter, and Half-Life: Alyx; a power supply costs extra.
Steam Frame gives you two ways to play: stream a game from a PC, or install a compatible game on the headset. Both work with VR and conventional flat-screen games. Streaming lets the PC do the heavy rendering; standalone play trades that processing power for the freedom to leave the PC behind.
The first question is which games you want to play, and where they will run. A game working on your desktop does not establish that its headset-installed version will work. Steam Frame Specs covers the hardware and links to the launch reviews, including PC Gamer's 80-point review.
Reservation signups opened September 14. The US 256GB kit costs $1,059 and the 1TB kit costs $1,299. Both include the tracked controllers, wireless adapter, and Half-Life: Alyx, but no power supply. Signups close September 17 at 10 a.m. PDT, followed by randomized reservation and waitlist placement; the first purchase emails start September 18. Why Steam Frame is streaming-first
Frame has no DisplayPort or HDMI input. Its included USB adapter creates a dedicated 6GHz connection that carries compressed video from the PC to the headset.
The adapter removes some router configuration from the job, though walls, interference, and PC performance still affect the connection. Valve describes Frame primarily as a PC-streaming headset, with local play as an additional option.
Tested's September 14 review separates standalone game testing at 50:18 from PC VR streaming at 55:39. Those are different workloads, even when they use the same headset.
How foveated streaming could help
Steam Frame's eye tracking lets the streaming system allocate higher encoding quality where the player is looking and lower quality elsewhere.
Foveated rendering changes the image the game draws. Foveated streaming changes how that finished image is encoded and sent, so games do not need to implement their own eye-tracked rendering to benefit.
Gamers Nexus discusses foveated streaming and Multi-Link Streaming at 27:55, after its latency tests. That is more relevant to wireless image quality than a standalone compatibility badge.
Standalone play: useful, but limited
Frame runs SteamOS, Valve's Linux-based operating system, on an Arm processor. Games built for other systems may need compatibility software:

Steam Deck already uses Proton. Frame adds FEX because the processor understands Arm instructions rather than the x86 instructions used by most PC games.
Valve's developer guidance favors trying the existing Windows build through Proton and FEX for most games. A mobile-optimized Android VR build may suit Frame better when one already exists. For the buyer's view, LTT's September 14 review covers standalone gaming at 9:35.
Frame Verified matters more now
Steam Frame Standalone Verified rates games running on the headset. It does not judge PC streaming: a demanding VR game can stream well from a powerful PC while remaining Unsupported or Unknown for local play.
Valve’s current standalone floors are concrete. Non-VR games need to run at least 30 fps at 1280x720 during normal play. VR games need to run at least 72 fps at 1728x1728 during normal play, and VR games below 1440x1440 appear Unsupported. Valve also checks controller support, controller glyphs, launcher behavior, legibility, Proton issues, and whether the game works without unsupported-device warnings.
Start with Valve's Great on Frame collection when choosing local games. Developer support includes hardware/default-settings detection, Proton detection, anonymous performance reporting, and controller inputs in Steamworks SDK 1.65. The August SteamOS adapter update was a software preparation milestone, separate from the September reservation launch.
Controllers cover VR and flat games
The two included controllers combine gamepad inputs with grip buttons, capacitive finger sensing, and 6-DOF tracking. Valve's controller documentation covers both VR and conventional games, so a separate gamepad is optional.
For flat games, Steam Input can present them as a gamepad or keyboard and mouse, depending on your bindings. VR games should show Frame's controller model and matching button prompts rather than switching to keyboard prompts.
Steam Frame vs Valve Index
Frame replaces Index's cable and external base stations with wireless streaming and headset-mounted tracking cameras:

Frame has roughly twice Index's pixels per eye: 4.7 million versus 2.3 million. Index's direct video connection avoids wireless compression, however. Higher panel resolution alone does not settle which image you will prefer.
Steam Frame vs Quest 3
Quest 3 has an established standalone game and app library. Frame centers on Steam, with local compatibility layers and an included PC-streaming adapter.
At $1,059 in the US before a charger, Frame needs to suit the games you already own. Gamers Nexus compares it with Quest 3, including latency, cameras, software, and privacy. Use those comparisons alongside each headset's local catalog.
Steam Machine as a host
Steam Machine could be Frame's cleanest living-room host, although any capable gaming PC can stream to the headset. The pairing keeps a SteamOS box under the TV and a wireless headset for play, but its usefulness still depends on wake behavior, latency, battery life, and compatibility coverage.
The June 2026 Verified update grouped Steam Machine and Steam Frame into Valve's hardware compatibility work. Steam Machine has since launched and begun daily order fulfillment. Frame now has its own reservation program; buying one device does not establish a reservation for the other.
Which kit, and what else do you need?
The 256GB kit makes sense if most games stay on your host PC and you mainly stream them. The 1TB kit adds room for local installs, with the same listed chip, memory, display, controllers, and adapter. Both support microSD cards.
Neither kit includes a power supply. Valve lists a separate 45W supply at $29 in the US, and says a Steam Deck charger or equivalent 45W-or-higher USB-C charger works. Its US accessory prices are $59 for the Ergonomic Accessories Kit and $49 for the Accessory Replacement Kit. Valve's launch announcement describes these as add-ons at checkout for customers with a purchase email.
Half-Life: Alyx is included, with one redemption per device through headset settings. If your Steam account already owns Alyx, Valve says you cannot redeem a second copy.

What buyers still do not know
Valve has not published the launch allocation, individual selection odds, or a guaranteed waitlist or delivery date. Status maintains the regional buying rules, including KOMODO markets and South Korea's coming-soon status.
Launch reviews now cover comfort, battery life, tracking, and software. PC Gamer's review treats convenience, comfort, tracking, wireless streaming, SteamOS, and upgradeability as strengths while flagging the price and monochrome passthrough. Before choosing Frame, check three things: whether your main games will run locally or need a host PC, whether your play space suits wireless VR, and whether the standard fit works for you.
