Steam Frame Controllers Explained

Steam Frame's controllers combine inside-out 6DoF tracking, capacitive finger sensing, magnetic thumbsticks, and a full gamepad layout without requiring base stations.
Steam Frame's controllers are designed to cover two jobs: tracked hands in VR and ordinary gamepad input for flat games. They do that without the base stations used by Valve Index, but the change also brings the normal visibility limits of camera-based tracking.
This guide is based on Valve's prelaunch specifications and developer documentation. It explains the announced design, not a long-term durability test of retail controllers.
How the tracking works
Valve's controller documentation describes full six-degrees-of-freedom tracking, capacitive finger tracking, touch and grip input, and standard controller buttons. The headset's outward-facing cameras track infrared markers on each controller while motion sensors help estimate movement between camera observations.
The practical win is simple: there are no Lighthouse base stations to mount, power, or recalibrate. The headset and controllers form the tracking system, so moving the setup to another room should require much less preparation than moving an Index installation.
The tradeoff is line of sight. When a controller is behind your body or pressed close to the headset, the cameras may have less information. Motion sensors can bridge short gaps, but retail testing still needs to show how gracefully tracking recovers in demanding games.
TMR thumbsticks
Valve's Steam Frame product page lists tunnelling magnetoresistance, or TMR, thumbsticks. TMR sensors read the stick's position through a magnetic field rather than relying on the same sliding electrical contact used by a conventional potentiometer.
That removes one contact surface that can wear and drift. It does not make the entire thumbstick assembly indestructible: springs, pivots, buttons, and other mechanical parts can still fail. The useful claim is narrower—TMR changes how stick position is measured and should avoid the specific wear mechanism behind potentiometer drift.
Capacitive finger sensing
The controllers can detect touch on more surfaces than a normal gamepad. Valve documents capacitive input across the grip, trigger, thumbstick, and face controls, allowing software to distinguish between resting a finger and pressing a control.
In VR, that information can drive hand poses such as pointing, opening a hand, or curling fingers around an object. It is presence sensing, not glove-like skeletal tracking of every joint. The quality of the animation also depends on how each game maps the available signals.
Valve's current documentation centers on tracked controllers. It does not announce a controller-free hand-tracking mode, so buyers should not assume that feature exists unless Valve adds it to the retail software specification.
One AA battery per controller
Valve lists each controller as using one replaceable AA battery, with an approximate battery-life figure on the product page. A replaceable cell means a depleted controller can return to play as soon as a fresh battery is installed rather than waiting on an internal pack to charge.
The published estimate is not a guarantee for every game. Haptics, tracking behavior, battery chemistry, temperature, and firmware can all change runtime. Rechargeable AA cells may be convenient, but buyers should follow Valve's retail battery guidance once it is available.
Straps and grip style
The standard wrist lanyards are the safety feature that helps stop a controller from becoming a projectile. Valve also shows optional hand straps for a more Index-like grip, where the controller stays against the palm when the hand opens.
Those are different accessories with different purposes. Use the wrist lanyards during active play even if you do not buy the hand straps. If Valve changes what is included in the retail package, the final in-box list should take precedence over this prelaunch description.
Flat games use the gamepad layout
The controller layout includes the inputs expected by non-VR games. Valve says Steam Input handles local and streamed flat titles, so a developer can support Frame through the same action-based system used elsewhere in Steam.
That does not guarantee every game will show the correct glyphs or choose a useful default layout. It means the hardware has a complete input path for the virtual-screen side of Frame, rather than requiring a second gamepad for every flat game.
What still needs retail verification
- Tracking reliability when hands are close to the headset, behind the body, or moving quickly.
- Final battery-life behavior across haptics-heavy and lighter games.
- The exact retail package, including which straps and batteries are included.
- Controller-free hand tracking, which Valve has not announced in the current specification.
- Long-term thumbstick, trigger, and grip durability.
